 Retrofit Day of Action

On each Retrofit Day we will be installing Compact Flourescent Light bulbs and performing radon testing for communities of modest means in the High Country called the Retrofit Day of Action. We will go door to door and ask permission to replace average light bulds, incandescent bulbs, with energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, which are up to 75% more efficient. At the same time we will also be conducting radon test to see if radon gas, which is odorless and colorless, is present in the home. We will also be educating these communities on how to live a more sustainable life by doing simple practices such as installing CFL's.

The Community Retrofit Day of Action (RDA) is an engagement, advocacy, and leadership activation program. During this service-learning opportunity "harvest teams" (volunteers) canvass assigned communities to deliver direct-to-door efficiency investment packages; performing radon testing and lighting retrofits. Exchanging old "dirty" inefficient devices for brand new efficient "clean" Compact Fluorescent Bulbs, FREE OF CHARGE, to the residents. In addition, the harvest teams conduct baseline energy assessments, and invite recipients to complete an impact profile and environmental awareness survey. Following a 90-day adjustment period, Retrofit staff reconnect with recipients, via telephone to determine monetary savings and to provide additional green solutions supplied by the Retrofit Fund and partners. This follow-up also allows Retrofit staff to ensure the integrity of the efficiency investment packages and further increase awareness of other energy and water conservation options.

A New Chapter

ASUSES is now a chapter of a larger non-profit called L.R.A.M., which stands for Lets Retrofit A Million. L.R.A.M. is based out of Atlanta, GA whose mission is to bring environmental change by educating communities about being sustainable, engaging communities who are not aware of the ecological impact they are having and partnering with organizations that help outreach to the community. ASUSES plans to host two of these Retrofit Day of Actions a year, one in the Spring and the other in the Fall. Each retrofit we plan to add at least one new sustainable practice and or technology to keep better improving communities of modest means with sustainable practices.
